A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah

My partner and I are nearly finished with the book A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. This book takes place in Sierra Leone, during the civil war there in the mid 90s. The author lived in a village that was attacked by rebels when he was around the age of twelve. He was not in the village at the time but it was destroyed. Knowing that the rebels would soon come to the village he was staying at, he and his friends went on the run. During this time he is recruited for the governments army. While he is there he learns how to kill mercilessly and do drugs when he is not at war. This book includes his memories on his time in the army.

While I was reading this I realized that war is only cool in movies. In reality it is gross, disgusting and repulsive. Some of the things that Ishmael was told to do by his lieutenant were absolutely horrible. To make matters worse, all of the terrible things he did, he did as a boy that was between the ages of thirteen and fifteen.

In our society today we have many forms of media that make war look "cool". Many of the video games we have today make the killing look awesome and fun. However, after I read this book I started having second thoughts on those kinds of games. The stuff that Ishmael experiences should never be purposely recreated for someones pleasure.I do not agree with a lot of the video games that exist after reading this book.

  1. My views changed as well after I red this book for my summer reading assignment. It's very graphic, but it shows how war really is.

  2. Alex- that's very true. Not only war, but other gross things are also glamourized for media and entertainment. I read "I am Malala" and my take away was very different from yours, but it's interesting to see how this book affected everyone. I've heard lots of people saying things similar to this...

  3. Alex, I like the way that you talked about how you saw war before and after you read this very graphic novel. I am also reading A Long Way Gone and it is one descriptive, grueling book that shows how the child soldiers were treated in war during this time period.

  4. Alex I also read the book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. I have found that people make killing look cool in video games but in reality it really is gross. I liked how you wrap this book up into a summary.... and this book is hard to summarize.

  5. I read A Long Way Gone also and agree with everything you said. Video games and action movies make war glamorized when it is really disturbing. When I read this book I had to skip pages from the gore and it really opened my eyes of how nations fight and kill over disagreements. I don't understand why companies make millions off of video games for little boys to pretend they are at war. I am all for having a strong nation but I think there are other ways to show that. If more people read the book or just as how summary like this it could really make a difference. Great blog.
